What is an ESB?

An Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) is a layer of middleware that connects the IT systems in an organisation. Instead of building a separate connection between every pair of applications — which quickly descends into chaos — an ESB centralises communication and offers one place all the data flows through.

Picture a company running an ERP system, a WMS, an e‑commerce platform and a handful of smaller tools at the same time. Without an integration bus, every change in one system has to be carried over to the others by hand or through point-to-point links. How does an integration bus work?

An ESB acts as a central communication hub. Every system connected to the bus sends and receives data in a standardised way, regardless of the technology it was built in. The bus takes care of translating formats, routing messages and orchestrating processes.

Is an ESB the same thing as ETL?

Not quite. ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) is a mechanism for moving and transforming data, often in batches.
